Deforestation in Hawaii

1) You are going to research deforestation in your country. Give me some information on it.

Deforestation is the permanent removal of forest cover from an area.

Deforestation in Hawaii, can cause a lot of damage to the state. Hawaii's native forests are among the Earth's biological treasures, sheltering more than 10,000 unique species. The forests supply Hawaii with fresh water, they protect Hawaii's world class beaches from destructive run off and sediment, and they are an important link to survival of Hawaiian cultural practices. Deforestation can cause animals to be displaced from their homes and many can face extinction because of their destroyed habitat. The lack of oxygen from the removal of the trees could also be a great disadvantage. The number of disadvantages override and definitely weigh more heavily than the number of advantages of deforestation, specifically in Hawaii. Deforestation causes lots of damage to be done.

2) You will explain the Social, Environmental, and Economic Impacts that deforestation has had on your country.

A) Social impacts :
-Deforestation can cause jobs or employment in the community. Many workers are needed to cut down trees and forests with machinery.

-Without trees, humans and animals will not be able to breath in oxygen. This will be a disadvantage to them since oxygen is vital to take in, and carbon dioxide is vital to take out.

B) Environmental Impacts:
-Climate change can be an impact of deforestation because by destroying the trees, there will be an excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide will alter the climate of the region for instance cool climates may get hotter and hot climates may get cooler.

-Deforestation may also cause soil erosion destruction because without the trees, the soil will be exposed to the sun's heat. The soil's moisture would dry up, nutrients evaporate, and bacteria that helps to break down products are affected. Eventually, rain washes down soil surfaces and erosion takes place.

C) Economic Impacts
-Deforestation can increase revenue because of furniture or paper products created from the trees. It is a booming industry.

-Can be a very costly project to cut down all the trees.

3) Look at the information in the Environment and Resources folder that talks about Deforestation in Canada. Based on the information provided do you think that deforestation is a greater threat in your country or Canada? Explain your reasoning using specific examples.

In my opinion I think there is a greater deforestation threat in Hawaii than Canada because Hawaii has many native forests which are among the Earth`s biological treasures which are more sought out when logging. Also, the environmental impact of soil erosion from deforestation is more likely to happen in Hawaii because of the heat causing the soils moisture to dry up unlike Canada where this does not happen as much. Deforestation in Hawaii is a larger threat since it is on an island and therefore special logging supplies tend are needed, which tend to be more expensive which is an economic disadvantage. Canada has 0.02% of  forested area and deforestation in Canada is among the world`s lowest since Canada is a world leader in sustainable forest management. Canadian forests are healthy, productive and thriving compared to Hawaii`s. The state of Hawaii does not have a supreme plan for sustaining forests and that is one major reason why deforestation is a large threat there. Prevention is key and Canada has been setting a good example for other countries and states. Today, Canada`s 348 million hectares of forest lands represent about 9% of the world`s forest cover, but accounts for only 0.3 % of global deforestation. Overall, Canada is less of a threat due to it leading a sustainable forest management project.

  2. Hawaiʻi is facing many obstacles but deforestation isn't one of them we are facing Rapid ʻŌhiʻa death a fungus that kills the tree from its roots, what do you know about that.

  4. Microbial life produces more oxygen on Earth than plants and trees.

Perhaps more important is the missing "fog drip" induced by native rainforests when they're removed.

Hawaii is facing extreme deforestation on the Big Island, Kahoʻolawe, and Niihau.

Blame the cattle and goat ranches.
